The links to the chapters are down below, but you may want to read the rest first.
As Kuma has been licensed officially by Seven Seas (see this tweet), we are dropping the series. Here are two more chapters with our normal editing process applied, and then we will dump the rest as-is. They will remain up on our site until we are given a notice to take them down.
Now, I know some of you are probably making faces like these
Well, making this novel popular was actually all part of our evil plan to get it licensed, and then we would drop it to make you all feel despair!
Blame yourself for making it popular!!!
That said I think most of us over here are quite happy that it got licensed (because we’re lazy and don’t want to work on it anymore, of course).
You should also note that the Light Novel is different from the Web Novel, as actual professional editors passed through it, and the author put more time and effort into getting it out. You should expect most inconsistencies to be taken care of.
Having a licensed professional translation is also often better than just some minions doing it as a hobby (I’ve heard many good things said about Seven Seas too).
I will now have to prepare and dump all the unedited chapters at once… That’s gonna take some work…
None of the other novels are dropped, so you can keep reading those here.
Here are some messages from the rest of the staff
From Ria Ria
I didn’t join for the bears but when I did start proofing I binged like everyone else, but Kuma was always done proofing before other novels. Manga came along and I jumped to the task but our translator soloed it. What was there for me to do when it came to Kuma? I wonder what will happen to the minions who joined because of Bear. Regardless, we’ll all miss our Bear Girl… TwT

It was a fun ride with you guys, thanks for the support and do remember to support the author’s official release too!

Despite my short tenure at first as a reader, then proofer, and sometimes editor of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, I really enjoyed having a part in the translation of this series. It was effectively the first series I’ve worked on, so I’m a little sad to see it go. Here’s to hoping the licensor publishes it quickly (and secretly that they drop it so we can pick it up again). Now, uh… Speedphoenix, help me out here. What else are we supposed to write?
Here’s chapter 289.
Here’s chapter 290.
Translated by Aikawa and Aki, Edited by Mali, proofed by SRL, grae, Tekbot and Speedphoenix.
Also, last week’s next linked to this song.
Does anyone know roughly what point in the LN these chapters correspond to? I assume the WN and LN must both have been licensed or are practically identical or the author has deleted the WN, right? Otherwise there’s no problem with X&M continuing this TL.

I’m super happy this finally got licensed!!!! I’ve been wishing for ages for a publishing company to pick this up! Too bad most of the other comments are just gonna be people talking about how that doesn’t mean they should have too buy the books to keep reading :(

I agree I thought there would be more spoiled… people. But most people here are just slightly inconvenienced or have logical arguments

They don’t. They can ask their local library to carry it.

Author can delete only the webnovel from the official site and maybe license it in Japan, if there is the will and enough money for it.

Sad to see that you’re dropping the WN, though, when it shouldn’t have been impacted by the licensing news.

Wait, this was a translation of the light novels? Because web novel and light novel are different things although similar so there is not real holding for copyrights issues since webnovels are public for everyone.
In another hand, lazyness,, busy rl or other personal motivation is just that, personal.

They can’t force you to delete the webnovel from your site, right? Don’t they as a North American company have not rights whatsover on the webnovel, that is under Japan’s juridisction and since Japan doesn’t have juridisction over Western translation of texts that are made publicly. Doesn’t the loophole over webnovels work like that?

I’m a spanish reader and my english is bad, my chinese is worse, but the google translator work fine with english, then I’m so gratefully for the chapters you translated. Unfortunately in my little country there’s no way I buy the Light Novel.
I enjoyed the time with the bear. Thanks for all. Good Bye.

13 bucks for volume 1 in digital format, that’s quite high.
Either way, thank you very much for the translation until now, hopefully the official translation will be at the very least as good as what we got here for what is now 4 years.
I’m definitely going to miss your nearly-weekly bear chapter as it became a habit to check on tuesday or thursday evening.

I’m both extremely happy that this got licensed, but also sad that no more free weekly releases…
A late thanks to you translators!

I can’t say I understand why the translation of the Web novel was dropped. The author himself still host the Web novel for free on the Internet so it isn’t as if translating their Web novel and offering it here actually has more of an impact on the Light Novel sales than what the raw free Web novel on the authors site does.
That is the first problem.
The second problem is that the Web novel is nit the same thing as the Light Novel. Minor and sometimes even major changes often happen… and as a fan of a story most of us actually want to be able to read both versions.
And last but not least…
A Light Novel is a book. Not only do we have to order it and pay shipping fees as well as custom fees… but it also means we have to make space to store it in our homes.
Now, I often enjoy having a physical copy of things… but when it comes to Japanese Light Novels, they actually function better in the form of Web Novels as they make for easy reading. When in bed and preparing for sleep, reading a few chapters on the smartphone as opposed to in a book is much easier. Not only is it easier to hold, you don’t have to use two hands and constantly flip pages and you don’t have to have the lights on.
Anyway, thank you for having translated so many chapters.

Addendum: the part about the physical copies being a problem seems to be solved since it appears to exist as a digital version. The other points I made are still valid though.

Welp. It was good while it lasted. The team that picked this up after XnM have a pretty bad way of translating. Some folks might appreciate it for the translation on principle, but I just feel aneurysms forming when I read that sort of grammar. Kuma Kuma is a nice slice of life you can shut off your brain and read. I just don’t like using by brain to decipher bizarro English..
