Chapter 62 – Bear-san Obtains Cheese

「Also, I’ve been holding onto a letter from the guild master of Crimonia.」

It was the letter meant to prevent me from running into trouble.
Though, in the end, I still got into trouble.

「From Rarok?」

So the guild master’s name was Rarok after all.
I just learned it.
Though, even if I had known it, I hadn’t planned on calling him that.
Since he was known as the guild master.
Sanya-san read the letter.

「I understand. I want you to be careful, because it is likely for adventurers to start a fight based on your appearance. It was also written for me to lend a hand if possible, for the sake of keeping you out of trouble. It certainly would be a problem for the guild if trouble were to come up every time, so I’ll pass along the message to not needlessly confront you. There were adventurers and guild staff watching your fight, so it should spread around quickly. That being said, if there are still any meddling adventurers, I’ll do something about them one way or another.」

「That would be a great help, but is it fine? Normally, the guild wouldn’t intervene in the quarrels between adventurers.」

「That is the rule for the guild as a whole, but it can differ depending on the policies of each guild master. If there are guild masters who are indifferent, then of course there would also be guild masters who favor particular adventurers. I have my own experiences from being an adventurer, so I understand the hardships that female adventurers go through. I am an ally of female adventurers.」

「In that case, I’ll be obedient and accept. Thank you.」

「If it’s your gratitude you want to give, then it is fine if you take some high ranking work, okay?」

「Was that your real intention?」

「I’ve never heard of anyone subjugating tiger wolves, let alone a black viper, by themselves. For you to be D rank is unbelievable.」

「Well, I’ve only been an adventurer for two months, and I didn’t take that many requests.」

「There are also C rank requests. It’s fine if you take them, okay?」

「Hmm, I’ll go back for today. I’m still in the middle of touring the Royal Capital.」

「Oh, is that so? How regrettable.」

「I want to go sightseeing in the Royal Capital. Are there any places selling unusual items?」

「Unusual items?」

「Ingredients or tools, anything is fine.」

「About those. The Commerce Guild would be well-informed about that, but it should be the western district now? Various shops are lined up there.」

「The western district, right? I’ll go there next time.」

I left the guild and went to the street stalls from yesterday.
When I arrived, I bought and ate snacks while I looked around the shops.
There were so many street stalls that if I had taken my time and looked around, I don’t think I would’ve finished seeing them after several days.
After I looked around for a while, I spotted the back of some familiar peoples.

「Fina, Noa, what are you looking at?」

I called out to the two I spotted at a street stall.

「Big Sis Yuna, why are you here?」

「I finished reporting to the guild. What are the two of you looking at?」

It was somewhat boisterous up ahead.

「That old guy is selling some kind of strange food, so it looks like it became a big commotion.」

「Strange food?」

「From what I understand, it seems to be food with mold on it.」

Yes? That’s it?
I moved the two of them and headed forward.
An old man and a young man could be seen quarrelling in front of the stall.

「What are you doing, selling such a thing? You’re annoying the people around you!」

「This isn’t just ordinary mold.」

「Mold is just mold!」

「Inside of this is edible food.」

「Can you really eat something produced by mold!?」

What I saw was cheese.
It’s cheese! It’s cheese!
It’s good, even eaten just like that.
It’s also good sandwiched in bread.
Above all, pizza can be made!
I also want to eat some gratin later.
Though, I think gratin might be impossible.

「The two of you, that’s cheese.」

「Chiizu?」

「You don’t know about it?」

「Yeah, I don’t know about it.」

「I don’t know either.」

The two of them didn’t know.
Which is to say, this is a hard to obtain item.
I must obtain this without fail!

「Like I said, this is edible.」

「Nobody would eat such a thing!」

The two of them argued, but the man just one-sidedly threw complaints at the old man and didn’t even listen to what he had to say.
I entered in the interval between their arguments.

「Old man, that’s cheese, right?」

「That’s right, so you know about it, young lady with a cute appearance?」

「What is it, suddenly coming out from nowhere. Even if a young girl gets in the way, I won’t let you off!」

「Shut up already, I’m in the middle of talking with the old man.」

「You bitch…」

The man tried to grab my shoulder.
Why are all the men in this world so quick to resort to violence, I wonder?
I caught his hand, and delivered a bear punch to the man’s stomach with my other hand.
The man’s body bent into a く character, and collapsed.
Though he lost consciousness, I made sure to hold back.

「Fuu, with that, it has quieted down. So then, old man, this is cheese, right?」

I talked to the old man as if nothing had happened.

「Ah, that’s the case, but…」

The old man looked back and forth between me and the guy who had collapsed.

「So, young lady, you know about cheese?」

「I know that it’s fermented from milk. I’m not familiar with the exact details though.」

「That’s right. Even though you’re young, you’re well-informed.」

「Old man, is it okay if I try a bit?」

「Of course, go on and try some.」

The old man cut a thin slice of cheese for me using a knife.

「Big Sis Yuna, you’re going to eat it?」

Fina asked me with a worried expression.
Well, that was obviously the case, considering I was going to eat something that mold was growing on.

「It’s all right, you know, because the mold is only on the surface.」

I put the cheese I had received in my mouth.
The taste was slightly strong, but it was, without a doubt, cheese.

「Old man, you’re selling this, right?」

「Yeah, I made this in the village. Since I needed money, I came to the Royal Capital to sell the cheese, but nobody wanted to buy it.」

As expected, it looked like cheese had not spread out much in this world.
Ignoring the guy from earlier, neither Fina nor Noa knew about it either.

「Then, in other words, it’s fine if I buy it all, right?」

「Young lady, you’re going to buy some?」

「It depends on the price though. How much is it?」

「It’s actually sold by weight. A mass like this is around this much.」

I looked at the amount of money the old man was displaying.

「I’ll buy it, everything you have, please.」

I bought it immediately.
When the negotiations were completed, it became noisy behind me.
The patrolling soldiers seemed to have come over.

「I heard that a quarrel was occurring, but- A bear…Yuna-san.」

The person who showed up was the person who had taken care of us during the matter with the group of thieves, Ranzeru-san.

「Yuna-san, what are you doing in a place like this? Besides that, I heard that a fight was happening here, but…」

「I’m shopping, as you can see. That man there was complaining about the old man’s food. It became a verbal quarrel, but when I forced myself in between them, he suddenly attacked me, so I knocked him out.」

「Yuna-san, what do you think you’re doing?」

「Being an ally of justice who protected the old man?」

I tilted my head to the side and looked puzzled as I answered.

「I understand. I’ll close my eyes to this matter this time. Next time, it would be a great help if you could resolve things without violence.」

「It’s not like I hit him because I like doing so. I only hit him because he attacked me, you know.」

「If that’s really the case, then I would have to have Yuna-san come with me to the barracks to hear more specific details. Since you’re Gran-sama’s and Eleanora-sama’s acquaintance, I won’t ask you to come with me this time, but please stop causing trouble. Even if that’s not the case, there are many issues elsewhere, so it’s quite a burden.」

The influence of my supporters sure was reliable.
If they were my enemies though, it would be scary.

「Now then, I’ll be off.」

Ranzeru-san bowed and left with his subordinates, who carried the unconscious person away.
I resumed the conversation about cheese with the old man.

「Young lady, I don’t really understand what happened, but thank you.」

「It’s fine, I also wanted the cheese anyway. So, are you going to sell me everything?」

「That goes without saying, it is a big help to me too.」

「If by chance you still have some, I’ll buy it.」

「The item bag I have isn’t capable of carrying a lot, but I brought what I could. This is all I have, but if you go to the village, there’s still a lot there.」

「Is that so? Then tell me where the village is, and I’ll go there to buy more next time.」

「It makes me happy to hear that, but is that necessary? I think even just this is quite a considerable amount, no?」

「I also look after some children at an orphanage, to some extent. I was thinking of serving them some dishes made with this cheese.」

「If that’s the case, I understand. I’ll welcome you when you come to the village.」

「Thank you.」

「No, after all, the one who should be grateful is this old man. Thank you. If I hadn’t sold all this, I would have been very troubled.」

「Is that so? Then I’ll pay you a little bit more.」

「Is that okay?」

「It’s fine. In return, sell it to me cheaply when I go to the village, okay?」

「Ah, of course. To save me the trouble of coming to the Royal Capital would also be a big help.」

I learned the location of the village from the old man and put away all the cheese that I bought into the Bear Box.
After parting with the old man, I walked among the street stalls with Fina and Noa.

「Yuna-san, about the cheese from just now, is it really that delicious?」

Noa asked me while making an overjoyed expression.

「Hmm, it differs from person to person, I think? I like it when it’s sandwiched in-between bread, and it’s delicious when used in pizza. However, there are people who dislike the taste as well.」

「Umm…can you also let me have some?」

「Will you be okay?」

「Yes. It’s like the time with the potatoes. If Yuna-san says it’s tasty, I’ll believe you.」

「In that case, shall I head back and make pizza then? Since almost everyone likes pizza.」

「I also believed in Big Sis Yuna right from the beginning, you know!」

Fina who was listening to our conversation also approved.

「Thank you, both of you.」

While recalling the ingredients stored in the Bear Box, we bought the ingredients needed for pizza before heading back to the Bear House.

    Thanks for the chapter. 🙂

    1. 😂 yea, right. Some dorks must be protesting about how this novel has no goal, conflict, yadayadayada. I’ve seen those type of people making absurd review on NU, giving bad rating just because there’s no well-calculated battle scenes.
They need to know what Slice of Life means. And I’ll gladly slap those knowledges into their head, with a warpick.

      1. …I like your enthusiasm, but I would just like to point out that smacking people with warpicks is somehow the exact opposite of “Slice of Life”, so I’m not sure that the message you are trying to convey would be able to get across. ;)

        1. he has a point tho, people lately only look at hero-demon lord plot .. if it doesn’t have that then its not a plot and give it bad reviews based entirely on their opinions instead of the quality of the novel.

          1. Well, yes, reviews are opinions. Objectivity, in a novel review, comes from explicitly stating what it is you are reviewing. If you come into this novel looking for an exciting, well-thought-out plot, you are likely to be disappointed.

Now, I enjoy reading this novel, and I can recommend it to others, but if you were to ask me if I found it to be high-quality, I would have to say no. As an adventure story, it fails for the aforementioned plot reasons; as a slice of life story, the “challenges” Yuna faces are completely meaningless in the face of her “cheat”. What I’m saying is, it’s hard to be sympathetic about the things she doesn’t have, when she has so much of everything else.

Add in that she is unlikeable (opinion), self-centered (opinion), and hypocritical (opinion, but isn’t it somewhat ironic that she’s complaining about *men* solving problems with violence, when she herself did so twice in the last two chapters), and it’s easy for me to see why people might be disappointed with the work.

Don’t get me wrong; there are numerous good points in the work as well (it’s quite cathartic, for one thing). But that doesn’t mean everyone needs to ignore its faults, as well.

tl;dr: There are good and bad points, no need to get angry at people for pointing out the bad points.

            1. I was too lazy to make my point about people’s lack of objectivity when giving a review in NU. Most reviews are highly bias to their likes and dislikes, as an example i stated the cliche hero-demon lord plot but of course, we are more likely to give a negative review than a good one and this can be detrimental to the readers who might like the work, would you read a novel that has 80% reviews of 1 * on NU even if its a subject of interest ? i know i have skipped a few that way then found out later i actually liked it and felt compelled to give a decent review trying to include the good and the bad but even that is a matter of morals and perspective and why am i still thinking about this …. im too lazy to fallow you into the rabbit hole, i better read some novel instead.

Her being hypocritical is part of her charm. So of course its funny when she complains about guys resorting to violence as she tosses people into the stratosphere. As for the challenges she faces? She’s facing serious problems more than half the time. Bullying, rape, murder, death, ect ect however because of the insanity of her cheat she is able to treat these things as non issues which is why the story becomes a slice of life story.

              1. Well, one needs to remember Yuna is the way she is largely because she was bullied constantly for years back in Japan, and frankly, the only reason she didn’t fall prey to the other threats is because it is likely literally Providential that she never came across the dark web or showed her identity on-line. If the Lord hadn’t decided to take Yuna out of her world when he did, it would have been only a matter of time before someone would have noticed this rich isolated sitting duck. (And if she hadn’t been given the bear suit, her prospects likely would not have been that much different in her new world either. When corrupt nobles, corrupt commoners with power and wealth, and bandit gangs keep showing the same pattern over and over when their deeds are brought to light, you have to wonder if there’s some hidden world-wide power pulling strings from behind the scenes–in fact, the author himself hinted as such in the Sheelin arc that there was something disquieting about the Bornard company dominating local commerce nationwide, and intimidating even nobles from going against them.)

The way the author is writing Yuna it has become clear that he wants people to understand that Yuna is actually in the wrong most of the time. For instance she butted into a heated argument between two men and when the younger man pointed out that she was a interfering, she was rude and told him to shut up.

The man did not attack her, he just grabbed her shoulder. Since when is punching somebody in the stomach, because they grab your shoulder, okay?

Because of her bear costume, the difference in strength between Yuna and and adult man is that between a 2year old toddler and an adult man.

If you saw an adult man punch a 2year old toddler in the stomach because it angrily say… grabbed the adult man’s leg… Who would be the one at fault? Same thing here.

Don’t forget that after her gird scuffle at the other adventurers guild, Yuna had absolutely no problem lying that the men had tried to rape her… In fact it seemed to come natural to her.

              1. In Yuna’s defense, the man surely thought if it was an adult-vs.-a-toddler type situation, it was in the opposite direction and therefore he could freely threaten, curse and get physically rough with a little girl–bad, bad, BAD move.

Anyway, if you look at how the author writes Yuna over the entire series, didn’t the guy get off really lightly? I mean, I can’t give spoilers here, and the kingdom seems to keep the details shut up tight anyway, but–doesn’t there seem to be a mysterious curious curse which has descended upon Yuna’s new world?

The moral that can be drawn from all these whispered tales and rumors ought to put dread into the hearts of monsters, noble and merchant mob bandits, wicked wizards, and bandit gangs everywhere:

IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIVES, do not, I repeat, DO NOT come in between the Bloody Bear and her treasured ingredients!

(P.S.–I believe the usual warning is to not come between a mama bear and her cubs, but somehow this seems far more terrifying…)

Is the same thing people say about Death March, saying is boring because is slow or no real suspence or no high-octane battles as if it was a xianxia even tough it says in the summary that is just about someone sightseeing. This novel is more or less the same concept, a overall cute, heartwarming and funny slice of life, and unlike Death Marh there is no mention of Demon Lords or other classic concepts for Isekai novel (except mosters).

Why people don’t look at the genre and its description.
Its like looking for dark gore death scene on a comedy romance slice of life genre.
There should be always be a warning like “hey if you are looking for blablabla this novel/manga is not for you”

      3. This is extremely lazy even for a slice of life novel, you know. While the battle scenes isn’t a big issue, there are plenty of other huge flaws. The biggest issue is probably how the author plans nothing at all. He just writes whatever he wants, it’s a mess in a way. He also can’t be decisive and do things as he had planned. He somehow made the start city into a permanent base despite planning to leave it soon after and not coming back but then he introduced the bear portal simply because he didn’t want to leave it and now she’s tied down with huge chains to a place instead of going adventuring like she should’ve. What’s the point of being in an isekai fantasy world if you’re just going to stay in the same place and explore a little here and there through portal usage? Urgh.

I know this a VERY late reply, but what you said is exactly what I have been despairing about lately. 2 prime examples såring to mind. 1 was Raising children as an adventurer (can’t remember the exact title) this person made a novel length rant that can be summarised as him being angry about, cooking, day to day life, slow pace, no action and fluff IN A SLICE OF LIFE FANTASY!!
people need to get THAT is the point, there is LOADS of action filled shounen and and tension filled thriller let us have our niece as well-.-

the other one just makes me sad, it was in the same wane BUT it was the top comment :'(
it was on the manga Nagasarette Arianto.

So to round off I hope people will get the point of the genre as a whole soon, the best hope is the comments for death march. For a long while people there also whined and complained but by volume 6-7 ish we finally got to the point where majorIty of haters had grown tired of it and people accepted and loved it for what it is:).

    2. The author conveniently introduces EVERY item that he wants to write a chapter about and yuna somehow “finds” as “rare” or “disliked” for stupid reasons. The chicken thing, there’s no way people wouldn’t have domesticated something like that since they’re clearly not that rare nor are they hard to catch or keep and they’re not averse to being taken care of by humans. As for the potatoes, there’s no way whatsoever that people wouldn’t have done trial and error and discovered the abnormality of the potatoes that caused sickness. Utterly impossible, especially seeing how convenient of a food potatoes are. Then there’s this cheese thing. There is no explanation as to why it would be unpopular and unknown. It’s food that lasts a long time and can be transported easily with item bags.

However, somehow everything yuna finds is rare. This author really isn’t that bright, no offense meant. He always writes illogical crap and pretends that it’s reasonable, either because he doesn’t care to think about it properly or because he just isn’t smart enough. Let’s take another example like the orphanage. He wanted that city lord guy to be innocent, so he made up some crap story that didn’t make sense at all and shifted the blame to someone else with a bad explanation. The city lord would have to be both blind and deaf to not get informed about the situation around the orphanage. It’d be one thing if it was a small family or a few, select people who were being suppressed, but this is a reasonably big orphanage, the kids go around everywhere pretty much begging for food and the ones in charge often goes around pleading for scraps from every damn place that sends food. That NO ONE would care enough to inform this supposedly righteous city lord is impossible and he, who cares so much about his citizens, isn’t even going out to check the situation with his own eyes every now and then? Yeah, right. About as believable as winning the top prize in a lottery twice in a row.

Well, there is history of such things happening. For instance, bison were apparently hunted into extinction in the Old World, and in the New World they faced the threat of extinction that many Ice Age animals succumbed to from the Indian hunting method of driving them enmass over cliffs–until the Indian tribes were able to finally settle the Great Plains when they discovered horses escaped from the newly-arrived Spanish, and found a perfect balance in centering their culture around hunting buffalo (which ironically led American settlers and troops to hunt the bison to near-extinction as a way to remove the Indians from the plains and eliminate competition for cattle grazing). The only reason you now see bison on farms and ranches today is it took humans THAT LONG to figure out that bison possessed some very attractive advantages over cattle (immediately available–remember the plains Indians were famous for using every part of the bison for many purposes–compared to the centuries of breeding it took to develop the Jersey Islands cows’ incredible richness in milk, oxen in Asia, the Brahman bulls resistance to heat and parasites, good leather breeds in South America, the Texas longhorns’ ability to thrive in deserts, good breeds for milk and meat, etc.) And you now see deer being domesticated on farms too–previously I don’t know if many people thought of domesticating reindeer the way the Laplanders did in the Arctic.

Remember too that while the author makes crystal clear that while cluckers were clearly a counterpart to earth’s chickens, they weren’t quite identical (a bit larger, and the orphans got a lot of exercise chasing the birds known for not being easy to catch) which conceivably could have discouraged their domestication before Yuna came along.

No way on potatoes? Afraid there is one very notorious example in history–the French farmers. Europe had been subject to constant cycles of famines ever since the Little Ice Age hit in 1300, because the shorter growing seasons were devastating on cereal crops (which also tended to be trampled by armies in the increased strife and unrest engendered by the harsher climate). The switching to growing root vegetables (particularly after the discovery of the New World brought the potato, which could sustain large families by itself as long as it was supplemented by milk and occasional greens) led to the easing of these famines in Europe for the most part–except the famines continued in France. Try as he might, the French king never was able to persuade the conservative French peasants to experiment with planting the potato–and a final famine cycle played a key part in the French king eventually losing his head (literally). Potato’s close relation the tomato also faced slow acceptance over suspicions that it was poisonous (legend had it that clam chowder Manhattan-style was invented to persuade American farmers that planting tomatoes was worthwhile).

        1. …/// Let’s take another example like the orphanage. That NO ONE would care enough to inform this supposedly righteous city lord is impossible and he, who cares so much about his citizens, isn’t even going out to check the situation with his own eyes every now and then?\\\…

I admit you have made some good points, but in the author’s defense, I must point out that he is constantly consistent on this. The commoners are afraid of their royals and nobles–and the noble family responsible for the disaster to the orphanage (and unfortunately other outrages to the common folk) will become a continuing thread in future chapters that reaches through upcoming arcs to Sheelin and eventually to the school festival at the capital itself. However, people who AREN’T afraid of the nobles (WHO SHOULD BE) basically have no compunction against oppressing people and even menacing Misa and Noa. (Obviously these people bent on suicide don’t know our Bear-Missy very well, do they?). Of course, the adventurer who knows better and somehow still manages to run into the Bear-san at every adventurers guild around the world is amusing as he mutters warnings to leave alone “the Bloody Bear”, but it’s much less amusing when the general populace takes that attitude toward its rulers. The author gives subtle signs through the story that King Forauto is well aware of the problem of the upper class and lower class being unable to recognize a common enemy and join common cause to defeat it. It’s probably why the king will walk around the streets without a crown in this arc, and months later drop in on the school students when they’re celebrating their efforts for the completed school festival and trying out the capital’s version of Yuna’s restaurants (and unfortunately his presence merely severely disrupts the mood). It could be why his oldest daughter tries to act as just a normal student (and ends up leading to a truly sad scene where a banished Tilia huddles in back of the booth because her notoriety overwhelmed her classmates as they tried to serve their customers).

I think you have to get a new level of appreciation of Cliff’s fury at being painted as a heartless cruel lord (and his wife expresses similar anger in Sheelin at being grouped with those kinds of nobles as well) when you understand Cliff is the most aware as anyone the absurdity of everyone in town knowing what’s going on in the orphanage, and yet they are too afraid of his status to tell him the truth! Yes, Noa’s attitude and behavior can be ridiculous and annoying to Cliff and Yuna (and I suspect the readers)–but I also suspect that the author has nailed just how any girl WOULD likely act in those circumstances. Prior to Yuna and Fina coming into her life, Lala-san was likely Noa’s only close acquaintance outside of her father, and Yuna’s coming has inevitably cut down the time he spends with her. Like Yuna herself stated, you don’t want nobles raised to be dumb, and the butler is zealous to serve his master to the best of his ability–yet from Noa’s perspective, the butler’s fearsome tutelage has to feel like being administered castor oil every day, so is it any wonder Noa will try to escape the mansion and have a hissy fit when Yuna and Fina leave her out of their activities? Thanks to Yuna, Noa was able to get closer to her already-friend Misa, but Misa lives far away (and even worse, her own mother and big sister live even further away in the capital–recall how happy Noa acts when either shows up or she goes to visit them in the capital). And really, Misa was even worse off. A girl entertaining friends from out of town will generally show them off to her own friends–so Misa not doing that when Yuna, Noa and Fina came to her birthday party suggests that she didn’t have close friends. I suspect that around that time, Misa might have been secretly cursing her birth as a noble and wishing she had been a commoner, because all her status was affording her no protection and just making her a target for the rival noble family and their numerous flunkies. When Misa takes such pains to personally invite Noa, Yuna and Fina to her birthday party might have been a hidden cry for help (and considering what followed, thank God they ignored any trepidations they had over accepting). It would also help explain Misa’s closeness to Marina and her adventurer group, because they might have been the only outsiders she saw frequently that she was friends with. In one sense, Misa was better off than Noa in that her parents were always around, and now (in the current storyline) she has her retired grandfather as a constant companion, but still…subtly between the lines you can see in the seaside excursion arc that Misa and Noa are desperately trying to cross that line between themselves and the orphans and Yuna’s workers, and they are pained when they realize they can’t. Is it any wonder when Noa tries to set up fan club for bears in which those distinctions don’t matter (and the first encounter of Shuri with Princess Flora suggests that Noa’s notion may not be as far-fetched as it might seem on first glance), Why wouldn’t you have constant turf wars between nobles when they live in widely-separated mansions that discourage frequent social interaction with the difficulty and slowness of primitive transportation, and they can’t achieve normal social interaction with their vassals nearby? As stupid as Yuan and the king considered the splitting of Sheelin between two noble families, as dear friends those families’ ancestors may have been trying to get around that separation problem (and now thanks to the toad, nobody will be trying THAT again).

And I think Yuna is oblivious as to why the royals and nobles persist in being so bothersome in interacting with her. For as much as the king and Cliff grumble about Yuna ignoring their rank, in their heart of hearts I think they appreciate someone coming into their lives that for all her annoying eccentricities, she isn’t afraid of them and will be real with them (and I suspect this is even far more true with Noa, Shia, Misa and Tillia), and she is gradually dragging the petrified reluctant Fina toward the point of doing the same. And in a world where class divisions hamper even well-meaning efforts to defeat evil and keep people safe, the Bear-missy showed in the crisis of the orphanage and on many occasions thereafter, she’s willing to step forward when she’s really, REALLY needed. Who wouldn’t want to spend time dining with or cuddle the bears of a girl like that (not just bluebloods, when Yuna holds a thank-you dinner for all the people who help her, there’s a touching moment when she ends up soundly losing an argument that she hasn’t done anything that special for them)?

    3. …///It’s cheese! It’s cheese!
It’s good, even eaten just like that.
It’s also good sandwiched in bread.
Above all, pizza can be made!
I also want to eat some gratin later.
Though, I think gratin might be impossible.\\\…

Frankly, I find that comment a bit puzzling. Compared to setting up a pizza oven, which requires intense heat and yet needs subtle control of the temperature throughout, an overhead grill or broiler would seem to be comparably easy kitchen tech for Yuna in comparison.

As far ingredients go, Yuna is already trying to promote the spread of traditional au gratin toppings (cheese and eggs), bread crumbs were probably no big deal even before Yuna engages bakers on this same capitol trip, and while I don’t know if the author mentions butter, its history of being fermented from milk goes back about as long as cheese on our planet (it’s referred to in Middle Eastern sources back in biblical and classical sources, and became very widespread industry in northern Europe during the Middle Ages, so it would be strange if it weren’t present in a world loosely based on Renaissance/Reformation-era Europe if magic replaced the rise of technology). Given what Yuna does in the kitchen throughout the series, it would be odd if she couldn’t pick up the French-developed technique of putting a brown crust on scalloped potatoes (and other ingredients like twice-baked potatoes, meat, vegetables or pasta).

  3. So the old man was selling cheese on the street. Could that be considered bear baiting? If Yuna turned into a boy would she/he be a bear trap? I just hope she doesn’t spit when talking, since nobody likes bear spray.

    Thanks for the chapter.

By the way, we already knew the novel had no planning, but usually it means the author is bad at writing and lazy.
Here, we still have proper characters that grow, and a “story” that goes along at its own pace that still feels somewhat like a planned story for a slow novel.

    1. You must be blind or just a bit stupid if you truly believe your own words. You can see everywhere that it’s a mess and things are just popping out everywhere without any mention of them being present before. There’s also extremely many details missing, even big ones. Also, there’s no growth for the characters here. The only thing that changed is that the mc isn’t as averse to communicating with others anymore, which is a minus, not a plus.

I do like this story, but I don’t appreciate a few parts of the story where these bad traits shine through. Like taking up permanent residence in the starting village or the bear portal amongst other things.

    2. Yeah, the author has way too many Chekov’s guns go off (see TV tropes website if you’re unfamiliar with that trope) for his claims of writing totally at whim and without planning to be convincing.

She is the one that start the fights though… And she is strong enough that even if they punched her she wouldn’t take any damage. Yuna is just a bad person here.

I could make sense of following sentence since I assumed it was between old man and the young man, later when it didn’t make sense I realise that it was talk between girls.

    「The two of you, that’s cheese.」

    「Chiizu?」

    「You don’t know about it?」

    「Yeah, I don’t know about it.」

    「I don’t know either.」

It would be good if when the sentence are confusing or not clear, to be marked who is saying what (only when is not clear, if is every time is distracting).

    1. Of course it is. Cheap way to pretend that the mc is a very good person who cares about others. I actually hate the entire orphanage bullshit. Should’ve never introduced it. Stupid move by the author, it’s part of the reason to why she’s not permanently chained down to the start city. Sigh.

Also, there’s a lot of hypocrisy in this novel. Just look at the difference in treatment between men and women. I don’t really care that much, but it’s starting to be a bit annoying how EVERYONE she has a fight with are men. Every single one. She has never had a real fight with or knocked out a woman despite being one herself. Also, the men in this story is portrayed as dickheads for some reason. All of them just spout obscenities and attack instantly, then after they get beaten, another few dozen storm in to get beaten as well. The author keeps on mentioning men in a bad light and even talks about how horrible life is for female adventurers and how this or that person is on the side of them.

The only good men in this story seems to be elderly or at least older men of around 40+ with some exceptions of course. Everyone else is just quick to anger and strike out as they can’t help but look down on others and would want to rape every woman around if they could. At least beat up some damn women, god dammit. I thought the chivalry gender thing was just for men against women, women shouldn’t even blink while beating other women, right? I never really agreed with treating women differently even for men. If they’re bitches, then you’d better bitch slap the fuck out of them and kill if necessary. No difference between men and women when it comes to life or death is what I believe.

The men she has fights with aren’t even all that bad, they are just a bit rowdy. It is just that everyone in the story seem to always side with Yuna. Only person that didn’t was that receptionist Ran. It does however seem that this is intentional by the author as we are shown in Yuna’s mind that she is incredibly selfish, lazy and self-entitled. I guess the author wanted to write a story about a character that while not completely trash, wasn’t actually a good person… And how they would act if they got an Over powered costume in an issekai.

But yeah, the author also showed what happened when women got their hands on power. Yuna is lazy and selfish and treat men like crap and the Guildmaster of the royal capital even flat out admit that she is giving women special treatment because it is so hard to be a female adventurer. I mean seriously? It’s as if that guildmaster is saying that the male adventurers don’t have it hard as well. Who’s helping the newbie male adventurers when they are accosted? Not this female guildmaster…

No,if being a female adventurer is so damn hard then the women have the same option that the men has… Just quit! Just quit being an adventurer if you can’t handle the job!

Being an adventurer you compete with other adventurers… If some get preferential treatment, then it will be even harder for the hard working people that don’t.

        1. In fairness, one has to remember, probably one of the main reasons Yuna constantly aggravates Fina by considering her a lifesaver is that her showing Yuna around allowed the new Bear-san to learn that a guild card was the ticket to an income and citizenship. I would think a society structured like that might leave a lot of people with few options outside of adventuring. If you didn’t have roots in a village, or a profitable trade, some people might have difficulty entering cities if they don’t possess adventurer or commercial guild cards (indeed, as we’ll eventually see, there are corrupt rulers who will take cards away from people in order to hold them in virtual slavery). Tirmuma’s family strongly opposed her returning to adventuring because she did have other safer options–some less fortunate men or women might not have them in that world.

And because there’s so many people who would be entering adventuring who can’t practice other trades, current adventurers struggling to make their living won’t necessarily welcome them (the notion that newbies who can’t stand up to intimidation by veterans wouldn’t survive out there anyway is not limited to Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear alone). Interestingly part of a current arc in Japan brings back Deborane and his companion, and we actually get his point of view on why he picked a lot of fights, and it proves not as simple as you might think, and Yuna looks at him a bit differently when they’re forced to work together (sorry, can’t give anything more specific than that without spoilers).

    1. Same here, I can’t stand raw cheese. I do like it powdered (like grated parmesan, or in mac ‘n cheese boxed dinners), and can tolerate it melted (like on a sandwich, pizza, or especially in mac ‘n cheese). But raw cheese? Ugh, if it’s not powdered or melted, I’d rather do without it in a sandwich. I’m glad the author had Yuna explain not everyone likes cheese (though she is right that potatoes and cheese seem to go well together, for some reason).
